Night-Trains is a toy train concept inspired by the Disney Monorail I received at age six. The project explores the space between a child’s toy and a true model train, blending the charm of classic diner display trains with a streamlined single-rail system and an integrated nightlight. The single-track design reinforces both the train’s uniqueness and its clean, minimalist aesthetic.
The track consists of a single, outwardly tapered rail designed to prevent the train from rolling off during turns. Each track section features a vertical male-to-female interlocking adapter, allowing pieces to slide together easily while improving both setup and structural integrity. As shown in the images below, each track requires four screws for mounting; however, the interlocking system allows these screws to support adjacent tracks as well. To remove the train, a single track section can be detached by removing its four mounting screws and sliding the track upward along the wall. Once released, the train slides off smoothly for play or maintenance. A dovetail joint along the top surface of each track serves as a visual guide for assembly and further reinforces the tracks as a unified system.
The train consists of five cars. The coal car houses the motor and drive wheel, which is secured by gravity and the weight of the engine. Wires run discreetly through drilled openings between the cars, connecting LED lights in the cabins, engine, and caboose. The lights can be adjusted using a small remote.
As the train moves along the track, the motor’s gentle hum and the sound of motion create soft white noise, helping promote a calming, sleep-friendly environment.
